Hurricane Prep Checklist (solar + battery homes)
The battery is charged. The storm is coming. The question is what happens if the grid stays down longer than the battery lasts.
Battery-only backup averages ~11 hours. Solar may be part of the home, but it should not be the only assumption behind a long outage plan.
Use this checklist to close the gap.
Before hurricane season
Confirm which battery and inverter are installed.
Check whether the system is compatible with Redde R1: Tesla Powerwall, FranklinWH, Enphase, Discover Energy, EG4, and Sol-Ark and other Sol-Ark compatible platforms.
Confirm whether propane or natural gas is available.
Review HOA rules, noise ordinances, emissions rules, and outdoor placement limits.
Choose a wall or pad location for outdoor installation.
Ask an installer to review the complete battery and backup setup.
Know the system.
Before a storm
Confirm the home battery is ready.
Confirm the fuel supply available to Redde R1.
Review which parts of the home need to stay powered.
Make sure the outdoor unit remains accessible.
Confirm Ethernet and Wi-Fi connections.
Keep installer contact information easy to find.
Keep it simple.
During an outage
The battery powers the home first. When it starts running low, Redde R1 turns on, tops it off, and shuts back down automatically.
It does not run all the time. It works when the battery needs it.
With a 250-gallon propane tank, Redde provides 50 days or more of power generation. It can also run on natural gas.
The system keeps going.
After power returns
Confirm the battery has returned to its normal state.
Check the available fuel supply.
Note any parts of the home you would prioritize differently next time.
Contact the installer if the system did not behave as expected.
Redde R1 has no annual service or maintenance cycle. It is built to stay in the background until the battery needs it again.
The complete hurricane backup plan
Solar is optional. The battery is the first responder. Redde R1 is what keeps the battery from running out.
Plan past ~11 hours.
