A month off-grid, zero compromise

This Practical Preppers’ customer runs a busy, all-electric household - heat pump heating and cooling, electric water heating, and a family that isn't shy about using power (the AC runs cold overnight, even in the height of summer). Like most homeowners, their real concern wasn't a spec sheet, it was two simple questions: would their bill stay manageable, and would the lights stay on if the grid ever failed. Practical Preppers wanted to find out - under real conditions, over a full month - whether a battery-first system with the right amount of solar and an on-demand fuel cell could answer both questions at once, without the family having to change a single habit or even notice anything was different.

Solution

Battery-first power keeps the lights on

The "sandwich" hybrid power system – aptly nicknamed for its compact shape! Practical Preppers installed a Discover Energy battery bank, a Sol-Ark hybrid string inverter, a ground-mount solar array, and a Redde R1 fuel cell – efficiently running on the propane already on site, then set up the system to prioritize the battery first, backed by solar and the fuel cell on demand. To put it to the ultimate test, they virtually islanded the home from the grid for 57 straight days – the fuel cell automatically stepping in to recharge the battery and cover shortfalls whenever solar wasn't enough, with zero manual intervention and zero noise. Result: For a full 57-day period in August — peak air-conditioning season in South Carolina, when this home typically runs about $400 a month — the home ran essentially off the grid, battery first, with solar and the fuel cell filling in behind it, while the family lived their normal life, AC included. The month's electric bill came in at about $80, roughly an 80% reduction from a typical August. The homeowner didn't know the experiment was happening until it was over.
