What Is a Solid Oxide Fuel Cell?
A battery can keep a home running when the grid goes down. But a battery has a limit. When an outage lasts longer than its stored power, the house goes dark.
That is where a fuel cell matters.
The short answer
A solid oxide fuel cell is the technology inside the Redde R1. It runs on propane or natural gas and works with a home battery and inverter.
The battery handles the house. When the battery starts running low, Redde R1 turns on, tops it off, then shuts back down automatically.
The battery responds first. The fuel cell keeps it from running out.
Why starting and stopping matters
Other products like this have to keep running. Redde R1 does not. It can start and stop quickly and is built to cycle repeatedly, so it runs only when the battery needs it.
That changes the experience of backup power. The system can sit outside, on a wall or pad, and work quietly in the background. Your neighbors may not know it is running. It is quieter than a refrigerator.
Then it stops.
What it means during a long outage
Battery-only backup averages ~11 hours. That may cover a shorter interruption. It may not cover the outage that lasts through the night, the next day, and beyond.
Redde R1 closes that gap. As long as fuel is available, it can keep topping off the battery. With a 250-gallon propane tank, Redde provides 50 days or more of power generation.
Solar can be part of the setup, but it is optional. The complete system is the battery plus the fuel cell.
Built for real homes
Redde R1 installs outdoors and runs on propane or natural gas. It is compatible with Tesla Powerwall, FranklinWH, Enphase, Discover Energy, EG4, and Sol-Ark and other Sol-Ark compatible platforms.
It also fits situations where a generator can be difficult to site, including HOA communities, noise-restricted neighborhoods, and tighter urban lots.
This is fourth-generation technology, backed by more than 130,000 field operating hours and 47 patents. It is made in the USA.
Proven, and ready when the battery needs it.
The answer in one sentence
A fuel cell matters because it turns a limited battery into long-duration backup power.
